Rules of the Road for Driving in Dundalk, Drogheda, Balbriggan, Blackrock & Dublin Areas

To maintain safety on the roads in Dundalk, Drogheda, Balbriggan, Blackrock and the greater Dublin area, everyone who drives within those areas should know how to drive safely (including keeping proper distance from other cars) according to all of the regulations (for example, when passing another car, you must pass it on the right) that have been set forth for each of those areas.

Use of at least one of the many roundabouts found in the area will be necessary to travel from point A to point B. When entering a roundabout, drivers have to give way (note: left or right) to all vehicles that are currently using the roundabout, as well as to vehicles that are entering the roundabout. This requires the proper use of signals (i.e., your turn signal) both before you enter the roundabout and before you exit the roundabout.

Every occupant of a vehicle (regardless of seating position) must wear a seatbelt to drive with passengers legally. Anyone riding a motorcycle must always wear an approved safety helmet. Using a handheld mobile telephone while operating a motor vehicle is prohibited throughout the towns of Dundalk, Drogheda, Balbriggan, and Blackrock, and in the area of Dublin. Drivers observed using a telephone while driving are subject to being ticketed and receiving points on their driver’s license, as distracted driving can cause significant safety hazards.

Following the rules of the road helps make trips safer for everyone and supports individuals in these constantly evolving communities in promoting responsible driving behaviour.

Speed Limits, Signs, and Road Safety Standards

All roads within Dundalk, Drogheda, Balbriggan, Blackrock, and the greater Dublin area have been established with national speed limits and are signed using kilometres per hour (kph). Speed limits for each road type are: motorways, 120kph; national highways, 100kph; regional highways, 80kph; urban, 50kph. In specific areas, such as near schools, housing developments, and high-traffic residential streets, speed limits are reduced to 30kph to protect pedestrians (including schoolchildren) and bicyclists.

Being familiar with the types of road signage, traffic signals, and roadway markings is important for keeping everyone safe on the road. There are three major types of road signs: regulatory signs, which tell you the maximum speed you can drive and what is legally required of you; warning signs, which warn you about hazards that may be coming up; and directional signs, which help direct traffic through a town or route in a manner that is both effective and efficient. You must also follow the markings that are painted on the roadway, including stop lines, crosswalks, and lane divisions and boundaries.

Road safety regulations and rules are updated periodically; therefore, drivers must stay up to date on the current speed limits and other traffic rules in their area. Responsible driving by understanding the signage, adhering to safety standards, and driving with care contributes to a smoother flow of traffic and a safer trip for everyone who uses the road.
